Spoken Word: I’m Free Too

they call me divine

mystic skin mahogany kissed by red wine

i studied hard so i enrolled in school

take out loans like they do

share the same bathroom, dorm floor, bedroom

so they make me think…

i’m free too

who am i?

some may ask,

grit their crooked teeth

and give sly looks

as I walk past…

i am the darkest part of sunshine

my body rattles like a rickety roller-coaster

full of curves that love formed

while everyone else is still

my movements make the globe turn

i am black truth wrapped in ebony splendor

the urge you get to call your Mother on her birthday

when you didn’t remember

we are the bleeding heart

of a tortured man’s laugh

the embodiment of a better future

liquefied in the amber of America’s scandalous past

a firm man’s moral might

contrasting a refined lady’s laugh

we are the descendant’s of Thomas Jefferson’s lies

slow singing and flower bringing,

dipped in brine

ripe strawberries dipped in rawhide

they call me divine

mystic skin mahogany kissed by red wine

i studied hard so i enrolled in school

take out loans like they do

share the same bathroom, dorm floor, bedroom

so they make me think…

i’m free too

till the cops come…

hide swiftly, then run

generation by generation, body by body

a curse unbroken, a reality unchanged

what happens to our children tomorrow

depends on we do today

we are the womb of civilization

with no recognition for our contributions

every accolade is history in the making

the unrealized promise of the emancipation

we are elusive beings transcending the world’s expectation

you have no power

when you deny me…

you came from my bosom

your ancestors know my name

during the dark ages you stared at my reign

so i understand why

they call me divine

mystic skin mahogany kissed by red wine

i studied hard so i enrolled in school

take out loans like they do

share the same bathroom, dorm floor, bedroom

so they make me think…

i’m free too
