On My Father’s Shoulders

Today, I saw a toddler sitting on his father’s shoulders. It touched my heart to see the glee and the excitement in his eyes. It reminded me of my Dad and the wonderful moments we shared. Fathers are so important. I don’t think western society gives them the love and recognition that they deserve oftentimes. Anyone can be a sperm donor but it takes a special man to be a father. Yeah… I said it! So in honor of my Dad I wrote a little poem.

I use to sit on my fathers shoulders

Seeing things from a height I would never personally achieve

A giant among men

And a teddy bear at the same time

As I got older it moved to piggyback rides

Soaring past skyscrapers on a miniature plane

Loving the feeling of flying

Laughing with glee in my heart

All aboard daddy airlines

Where the flight attendent proves goldfish

And friendship is the order of the day

Deep in my heart…

I know I’ll never be that tall again

Or perhaps even have that same feeling

Of being over 6 feet tall and protected

From any danger that the world might throw at me

He was more than my father

He was my sky scrapper, friend and trusted confidant

His mere presence made my dreams a reality

There was no counselor I trusted more

No matter how much we argued and disagreed

He was adored because of his honesty

The apple of his eye

I look for a higher love now that he died

But I reminisce on the time

When he took me on piggyback rides

Love always, Esha <3
